Trinidad/Tobago

Yellow Fever / Winnie the Pooh

This morning I visited a local clinic and got my yellow fever injection. I need it to enter Venezuela, which is still my plan after Trinidad/Tobago. Two interesting observations;

  1. I had to fill out a form with questions such as: “Do you smoke? (+ Age when you first started smoking)” and “Do you drink alcohol? (+ Number of drinks per week”)
  2. The nurse giving me the injection (TT$ 160 = DKR 130) was kind and professional. On her table she had two Winnie the Pooh figures. With bandages.

Answer this... Winnie the Pooh in bandage

The Caribbean New York

It is late in the evening and I am sitting at my balcony (!!) at the “The Copper Kettle” hotel in Port of Spain, Trinidad. A generator is running wildly to the left of me, but I have now plugged Tina Dickow in my ears – enjoying the Caribbean all-day heat.

The taxi driver taking me from the airport called this city the Caribbean New York, proudly stating that “we have almost everything here”. And apparently he was right. Port of Spain is a multicultural place where dressed up businessmen meets cool-colored dreadlock boys. Calypso/reggae music is hammering from cars while wannabe-western coffee shops serves latte and iceblends. My best choice today – by the way – was having one of these (caramel flavored icecoffee) in the sweaty mid-day heat 🙂

By now you might have noticed, that the capital of Trinidad is not paradise on earth. Port of Spain is an industrial concrete place with traffic chaos, and the city doesn’t nearly hold the same poetic charm as Havana, Cuba (the only other place I visited in Caribbean.) At least that is my first impression, though I have a feeling there is much more to the story.
